rather the 65 teams that will play on courts across the nation in hopes of making the trek to the
Final Four in Saint Louis, MO. Whether you are making the journey to the Final in hopes that

Men's Final Four semifinal games are on Saturday while the Championship game will be played
on Monday evening. Men's Final Four games will be played on Saturday April 2nd and

Brief Final Four History
1939 Final Four
Site: Patten Gym, Evanston, Ill.
A year after the first National Invitational Tournament, the National Association of Basketball
Coaches and the NCAA teamed up to create their own competing tournament. Oregon's "Tall
Firs"—6'8" center Slim Wintermute, and 6'4 1/2" forwards John Dick and Laddie Gale—
dominated the event. Oregon won its games by 15, 18 and 13 points. Dick scored a game-high
13 in the final.
Significant Facts: The tournament consisted of only eight teams for its first 12 years. For the
first seven years only two teams advanced to the final site.
Swan Song: The NABC lost money on the event, so it asked the NCAA to assume full control of
the tournament.
1940 Final Four
Site: Municipal Auditorium, Kansas City, Mo.
Most Outstanding Player: Marvin Huffman, Indiana
Indiana defeated Kansas despite the fact that Jayhawks coach Phog Allen managed the
tournament and scheduled the final just down the road from his Lawrence campus. The
Hoosiers actually went scoreless the first eight minutes of the game before surging to a 32-19
halftime lead en route to their first title. Huffman and Jay McCreary led the Hoosiers with 12
points, while Allen's son, Bob, scored a game-high 13.
Memorable Moment: Prior to the final there was a ceremony to honor the father of the game,
James Naismith, who died Nov. 28, 1939.
Swan Song: Springfield (Mass.) College, where Naismith nailed up the first peach basket in
1891 when it was known as the International YMCA Training School, made its only NCAA
appearance. The Maroons lost to Indiana 48-24 in the first round.
